Nissan Towing Capacity by Model: the West Tennessee Guide

Nissan Towing Capacity by Model: the West Tennessee Guide

The Armada leads the current Nissan lineup at 8,500 pounds, followed by the Frontier at 7,150, the Pathfinder at 6,000 with the right package, and the Rogue and Murano at 1,500. Those are properly equipped maximums. Your specific truck's rating depends on cab, bed, drivetrain and package, and the spread inside a single model is wider than most buyers expect.

One thing before the numbers. If you've read an older Nissan towing guide, it probably led with the Titan, and that truck isn't in the lineup anymore. More on why in a moment.

How Much Can Each 2026 Nissan Tow?

Here's the whole current lineup in one place, at maximum properly equipped ratings. Armada 8,500 pounds, Frontier 7,150, Pathfinder 6,000, Rogue and Murano 1,500 each. The gap between the Pathfinder and the Rogue is the real dividing line in this lineup: above it you're towing trailers, below it you're towing very little.

2026 model Max towing, properly equipped What that covers
Armada 8,500 lb Travel trailers, larger boats, equipment trailers
Frontier 7,150 lb Boats, campers, farm and utility trailers
Pathfinder 6,000 lb Mid-size camper, boat, small livestock trailer
Murano 1,500 lb Small utility trailer, jet ski
Rogue 1,500 lb Small utility trailer, jet ski

Read "properly equipped" as a real condition, not fine print. Most of these figures need a factory tow package, and on the Pathfinder that package nearly doubles what the vehicle's allowed to pull.

Why Is the Titan Missing From This List?

Because Nissan discontinued it. The Titan and Titan XD ended production after the 2024 model year, and Nissan now lists both under discontinued vehicles on its own site. Any towing guide still leading with a Titan rating is describing a truck you can't order, which matters if you're comparing a full-size rating against what's actually available.

The Frontier's Nissan's truck now. That's the whole lineup.

If you need more than the Frontier's 7,150 pounds and you want a Nissan, the answer's the Armada rather than a pickup. That's an SUV instead of a bed, and it's an honest limitation of the current range rather than something we're going to talk around.

Used Titans still come through, and there's nothing wrong with buying one. Just know that you're buying into a discontinued nameplate, which affects parts availability planning over a long ownership and is worth weighing rather than ignoring.

Which Frontier and Pathfinder Configurations Reach Their Maximum?

Not the ones most people assume. Per the 2026 Frontier press kit, the highest Frontier rating goes to the King Cab S 4x2 at 7,150 pounds, while the Crew Cab Long Bed 4x4 sits lowest at 6,760.

Read that again. The 4x4 crew cab most buyers picture as the most capable truck is the least capable one for towing, because every pound of drivetrain and cab is weight the rating has to absorb.

2026 Frontier configuration Max towing Max payload
King Cab S 4x2 7,150 lb 1,620 lb
Crew Cab S 4x2, standard bed 7,070 lb 1,490 lb
King Cab SV 4x4 7,000 lb 1,450 lb
Crew Cab PRO-4X 4x4, standard bed 6,960 lb 1,330 lb
Crew Cab Long Bed 4x2 6,920 lb 1,400 lb
Crew Cab Long Bed 4x4 6,760 lb 1,200 lb

Every Frontier here runs the same 3.8L V6, rated at 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft. Same engine, 390-pound spread. The configuration's doing all the work.

The Pathfinder swing is bigger still.

Pathfinder SV, front-drive Tow rating
Without the Premium Towing Package 3,500 lb
With the Premium Towing Package 6,000 lb

One box on the order sheet turns a light-duty tow vehicle into a genuine one. It's the most consequential option on the sheet for anyone who tows.

If there's any chance you'll tow, order the package. Adding it later is difficult and sometimes not possible, and a Pathfinder without it is rated for barely more than a Rogue. The exception is the buyer who genuinely never tows, who'd be paying for hardware they'll never connect anything to.

Trim-by-trim detail on the truck sits in our Frontier trim guide , and the Pathfinder and Armada pages carry the current configurations we stock.

What Is the Difference Between Towing Capacity and Payload?

Towing capacity is the trailer weight behind you. Payload is everything the vehicle carries: passengers, cargo, accessories, and the trailer's tongue weight pressing down on the hitch. Payload is usually the limit an owner exceeds first, because tongue weight lands in the vehicle rather than on the trailer's own axles.

Here's why that matters more on a Frontier than on a full-size truck.

Look at that configuration table again. A Crew Cab Long Bed 4x4 carries 1,200 pounds of payload. Here's where it goes:

  • Four adults and their gear already use a meaningful share of it.
  • Tongue weight commonly runs around a tenth to fifteen percent of trailer weight, and it lands in the vehicle, not on the trailer's axles.

Put those together and a heavy trailer can push you over payload while the tow rating still looks comfortable.

The number that governs your specific vehicle is on the driver's door jamb sticker, not in any brochure or on this page. Go read it.

When Does Tennessee Require Trailer Brakes?

Sooner than most people think. Under Tennessee Code Annotated 55-9-204:

Trailer gross weight What the law requires
Under 1,500 lb No brakes
1,500 to 3,000 lb Brakes on one axle
3,000 lb and above Brakes on all axles, plus a breakaway device that applies them automatically

Now put that against the lineup. A Rogue's entire tow rating is 1,500 pounds, which sits exactly on the first threshold. A Pathfinder without the tow package tops out at 3,500, already past the point where all-axle brakes and a breakaway device are required.

So for most Nissan owners towing anything real around here, trailer brakes aren't optional equipment. They're the law.

One narrow exception, and a warning. The statute carves out trailers operating solely intrastate at 7,500 lb GVWR or below that use a hydraulic surge breakaway mechanism separate from the hitch. Rules change, so confirm the current text before you rely on it. And if you're crossing into Mississippi, Arkansas or Kentucky on a regular run, those states set their own thresholds.

Jackson sits at the center of a rural retail catchment where the nearest rival Nissan stores are 45 to 70 minutes out in Dyersburg, Martin and Paris. That distance is why we'd rather you got the hitch setup right the first time than discovered a problem at a boat ramp an hour from anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum towing capacity of a 2026 Nissan?

The Armada leads the current lineup at 8,500 pounds when properly equipped, using the 3.5L twin-turbo V6 rated at 425 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. All 2026 Armada trims share that rating, so the tow number doesn't change as you move up the trim ladder.

Does Nissan still make the Titan?

No. Nissan ended Titan and Titan XD production after the 2024 model year and lists both as discontinued. The Frontier is now Nissan's only pickup, and the Armada now tops the lineup at 8,500 pounds.

How much can a Nissan Pathfinder tow?

Up to 6,000 pounds with the Premium Towing Package. Without it, a front-drive Pathfinder is rated at 3,500 pounds. That package roughly doubles the capability, so it's the most consequential option on the order sheet for anyone who plans to tow.

Which Nissan Frontier configuration tows the most?

The King Cab S 4x2, at 7,150 pounds. The Crew Cab Long Bed 4x4 sits lowest at 6,760. Every Frontier uses the same 3.8L V6, so cab style, bed length and drivetrain account for the entire 390-pound spread between them.

When does Tennessee require trailer brakes?

Tennessee Code 55-9-204 requires brakes on one axle for trailers between 1,500 and 3,000 pounds, and brakes on all axles plus an automatic breakaway device at 3,000 pounds gross weight and above. Trailers under 1,500 pounds need no brakes. Confirm the current text before relying on it.

Can Chuck Hutton Nissan help me set up a hitch in Jackson, TN?

Yes. Our service department runs Nissan Certified technicians and is open Monday through Friday plus Saturday mornings, so hitch fitment, wiring and trailer brake controller questions are normal appointments. Bring the trailer's weight and the vehicle and we'll work from your door jamb sticker.

  • Current Nissan tow ratings, properly equipped: Armada 8,500 lb, Frontier 7,150 lb, Pathfinder 6,000 lb, Rogue and Murano 1,500 lb each.
  • The Titan's gone. Nissan ended it after the 2024 model year, so any guide still leading with a Titan number is describing a truck you can't order.
  • Configuration beats badge. The 4x2 King Cab Frontier out-tows the 4x4 Crew Cab Long Bed by 390 pounds on the same engine, and the Pathfinder's tow package nearly doubles its rating.
  • Tennessee requires brakes on one axle from 1,500 pounds and all axles plus a breakaway from 3,000. That threshold catches almost every trailer worth owning.
